Best Natural Baby Changing Products
Written by: Iris Lucia | Last update: 17 january 2022
A baby’s skin is very tender. For this reason, it is important to pay attention to which products you use on your baby’s skin. The more natural the product, the better for the skin! Did you know that 50 to 60% of what is put on or in contact with the skin is absorbed by the body? After reading the ingredients in my own daily care products at the time, I became more aware of buying them. When I was pregnant with my twins, I started looking at this even more consciously. I certainly didn’t want to put any harmful substances on my baby’s skin.
There are also a number of products to consider when changing your baby. You can think about which wipes, butt cream and diapers you want to use. This is of course quite a job to figure out, so I have listed the best natural changing products for you below:

Why are natural baby changing products important?
Harmful substances have been added to many changing products. The longer the list of ingredients, the more unnatural substances have been added to the product. And of course you don’t want these added chemicals on your sweet baby’s skin. Using natural products offers many benefits for your baby. View the benefits below.
Benefits of natural changing products
Natural changing products bring many benefits for your baby. Check out the benefits in the summary below:
- Reduces the risk of contact allergies
- Less to no skin irritation
- Less or no fluctuations in the PH value of the skin
- Provides smooth skin
- Less or no trouble with chapped and sensitive skin
- Restores and soothes the skin
Natural baby wipes
The best natural wipes contain no added harmful ingredients. The following added (harmful) substances regularly occur with unnatural wipes:
- Propylene Glycol: this is a moisture carrier that is absorbed by your baby’s skin. It degreases the skin and dries out as a result. In addition, the substance can even end up in the bloodstream!
- Phenoxyethanol: preservative (which is all-ready not good) that disrupts hormones
- Lactic acid: lactic acid from micro-organisms, synthetic variant causes skin irritations
- Benzoic acid: chemical preservative that offers a high risk of hormone disruption
- Sodium benzoate: preservative developed through sodium salt. This product acidifies the skin which causes irritation and is also very dangerous for your baby
- Perfume: I think this substance speaks for itself. It is a hormone disrupting and skin irritating additive
Essence of natural wipes
As you can read in the list above, natural wipes are very important for your baby, as unnatural wipes contain very harmful substances. These additives can lead to skin irritation, hormone imbalance, acidification of the skin and eczema. And of course these are things you don’t want for your most precious possession. So make sure to get the most natural wipes on the market!
Best Natural Wipes
Even though the range of natural wipes is smaller than the so-called ‘regular’ wipes, there are fortunately still providers that offer natural wipes. I have selected for you which wipes are currently the best on the market. Check out the best natural wipes below:

Natural baby butt cream
Natural butt cream/oil is very important since you don’t want to put chemicals on your baby. The best natural baby but cream contains no harmful substances and is also really caring for the skin. With unnatural butt cream, the following substances want to occur regularly:
- Petroleum: petroleum is a very dangerous substance which unfortunately is even the basis of some diapers. Petroleum is the waste of the oil and petrol industry(!)
- Phenoxyethanol: used as an antibacterial agent. This substance is very dangerous, it can even have a negative effect on your baby’s brain and nervous system!
- Propylene Glycol: this substance is used to help the skin absorb substances that it would not normally absorb. In severe cases, this substance can lead to unwellness and even neurological problems. Nausea and headaches are also no exception when using this substance
- BHA: keeps the fats in the cream stable, which prevents a bad smell. BHA can cause irritated skin
Paraffinum Liquidum: this substance dries out your skin, can accelerate the aging process of your skin and is very dangerous on damaged skin - Paraffin: this substance is also found in candles and can be compared with diesel fuel. The aromas that come from it are harmful
- Cera microcristallina: this is used as a thickener and therefore ensures that the skin is less able to breathe after use
- Benzyl benzoate: unfortunately there is not much to be found about this substance. But this substance is also harmful. If you look it up on the internet, you will almost only find documents about how to safely transport this substance. I think that says enough…
- Benzyl alcohol: like any kind of alcohol, it dries out the skin and causes irritations
Essence of natural butt cream
If you have read the above list then you can understand why natural butt cream is very important. You do not want all the harmful substances from unnatural cream (or oil) on your baby. And especially not if you know the possible serious consequences of these harmful substances.

Natural baby diapers
Even if you wouldn’t think that there could be harmful substances in diapers, unfortunately there is. The unnatural harmful substances can vary from lotion to absorbent granules that turn into gel. Check out the list below for the most common harmful substances in diapers:
- Petrolatum: A mineral oil that removes moisture from the skin and also ensures that waste products can no longer be drained properly
- Sodium polyacrylate: these are the white granules in the diaper. These granules absorb the moisture but change into a kind of chemical gel due to the moisture. As long as this gel does not touch the child’s skin, it is considered safe. So always make sure that the diaper is changed on time and that a full diaper is handled carefully
- Outer layer: the outer layer of the diapers often consists of plastic. Even though this shouldn’t be harmful to the baby, it is to nature
Washable Diapers VS Disposable Diapers
In addition to disposable diapers, you also have washable diapers. This means that you can use the diapers several times because you can wash them by hand or in the washing machine. Washable diapers are a lot better for nature since you don’t throw the diaper in the garbage after every change. In addition, washable diapers are also a lot better for your baby, as they generally do not involve harmful substances. If you also wash the washable diapers with 100% natural laundry detergent, you know for sure that you are doing the best possible.
Even though washable diapers are more ecologically responsible, healthier and better for your budget, my personal preference does not go out to them. Firstly because it can be a difficult job to properly clean the reusable diapers without getting yourself or the other clothes in the wash, secondly because I have twins and without the reusable diapers i all-ready do not have enough time 😉
Essence of Natural Diapers
Knowing that there are often substances in ‘normal’ diapers that are harmful to your child and knowing that your child will use approximately 4000(!) diapers in the first 3 years, I think it is very important to use natural disposable or washable diapers. If you are using cloth nappies then I would also really recommend using the most natural laundry detergent possible. Actually, I would recommend that for all clothing of your child (s) and yourself. The substances that are in unnatural laundry detergent are frightening and you do not want to have those on yourself or your child.
