Traveling with a baby can sometimes be quite a challenge. You soon find out that a baby needs quite a few things, like a bottle, a clean diaper and possibly some food. When you go out you want to make it as easy as possible for yourself. A good diaper bag can certainly help with this. I have selected the best diaper bags and listed them for you. I also made a list of what goes in the diaper bag. This can be really handy for mommies to be!

What types of diaper bags are there?

There are many different types of diaper bags. From a cool backpack to a mom bag, everything is possible. I have made a list for you below with the most popular types of diaper bags. I will also let you know what the pros and cons are of these specific types of diaper bags.

1. The tote diaper bag

The tote diaper bag is a large handbag. This bag is the best combination of a normal handbag and a diaper bag. This bag looks like a large handbag from the outside, but it has handy compartments on the inside. So this is the ideal choice if you want a diaper bag that resembles a normal bag as much as possible.

2. The diaper backpack

This diaper bag is the best choice when it comes to your back. Because you wear the diaper backpack on your back, the weight of the bag is well distributed over your entire back instead of on one side. A disadvantage of this diaper bag is that you have to remove it from your back if you want to take something out of it. I have this diaper bag myself and I am very satisfied with it. It packs a lot into it and it has many useful pockets. For me it is also an advantage that I can carry it on my back, because with twins I need both hands.

3. The mom bag

You can recognize the mom bag by its large size and plenty of space. Ideal if you have to take a lot with you. You can easily hang this bag on your stroller. A disadvantage of this bag is that it quickly becomes messy in the bag. The bag has few compartments, so you have to throw a lot together. So it can sometimes take a while to find something.

4. Ecological diaper bags

If you want to go for the most environmentally conscious choice, you should go for the ecological diaper bag. This diaper bag is made of biodegradable materials that contain no toxic substances.

5. Adjustable diaper bag

If you really can’t choose which diaper bag seems best to you, you can still opt for an adjustable diaper bag. You can wear this diaper bag on your shoulder or on your back. It is a fairly large bag with many compartments.

What should be in a diaper bag?

First of all I would like to say that it differs per baby and lifestyle what goes in the diaper bag. A one month old baby needs completely different things than a ten month old baby. The season also plays a role when packing the diaper bag. All things to take into account. I therefore make a distinction in the list below in the type of food that the baby receives and the season.

The base

  • Diapers: The most important item as far as I’m concerned! ?. Always make sure you have some diapers in your diaper bag. If you use washable nappies, make sure to pack some liners and an overpants in your nappy bag.
  • Wipes: Make sure you always have a pack of wipes with you. Even if it’s not for dirty bottoms, it’s for a dirty mouth or to wipe away some dirt. So indispensable!
  • A changing mat: You never know where to change your baby. Personally, I also find it a lot more hygienic to use my own changing mat when I have to change my baby outside the house.
  • Diaper pouch: A diaper pouch is a small bag containing everything you need to give your baby a clean diaper. So you don’t have to take the whole diaper bag with you when you want to change your baby, but you can easily take the pencil case and the changing mat with you.
  • Bags: Disposable bags to put your baby’s dirty diapers in if there is no trash can available. The bags are also useful for dirty clothes or dirty dishes of your baby.
  • Spare clothes: Babies do have accidents, especially when you’re away from home. Handy to bring an extra set of clothes!
  • Hydrophilic diapers: Always handy to take a hydrophilic diaper with you. This somehow always comes in handy!
  • A bib/burp cloth: To keep the clothes your baby is wearing clean for as long as possible.
  • Pacifier: It is always useful to carry a spare pacifier when your baby uses it. A pacifier can get lost or fall to the floor.
  • Toys: A book, cuddly toy or toy to entertain your baby.

If you are breastfeeding

  • Breast pads: When breastfeeding, it sometimes happens that your nipples leak. To make sure you don’t get wet spots on your clothes, you can put nursing pads in your bra. An extra set in your diaper bag to replace them is therefore very handy.
  • Nursing cloth: If you don’t feel comfortable breastfeeding openly in public, a breastfeeding wrap can offer you a little more privacy.

If you bottle feed

  • Tower with milk powder: It is useful to take the milk powder already measured in a tower. Always take more food with you than you think you need. This is for when for example you drop a nutrition or if you want to stay somewhere longer than expected.
  • Hot water in thermos: What I find useful is to heat water (make sure it is only a few degrees more than normal when you put it in the thermos) at home and to take it with you in a thermos. This way you can easily pour the hot water into the bottle and don’t have to worry about where to heat the water.

If your baby eats solid food

  • Baby food: Think of fruit, a sandwich or vegetable snack. I would also always bring a extra snack in case your baby still seems to be hungry in addition to his normal food.
  • A cup: A cup or sippy cup to drink from.
  • Dinner ware: for eating a snack non-toxic dinnerware can come in handy. Sometimes you only need a spoon and sometimes you also need a plate.

Extra for the summer

  • Natural sunscreen: To protect your baby’s skin.
  • Sun hat: For when your baby has to sit in the sun for a longer time.

Extra for the winter

  • Beanie: A nice beanie for when it’s a bit colder than you expected.
  • Gloves: Gloves are also great to put on when it gets a bit colder.
